The AF Tester: What it is and How it Works The AF tester is a tool used for the determination of transformation temperature of nickel titanium (NiTi) shape memory by free recovery. It is built as described in the ASTM specification F2082/F2082M This device will aid in determining the martensite-to-austenite transformation temperature of fully annealed or heat nickel titanium alloys by measuring the deformation recovered during the thermal transformation. 
The System Components:
Mechanical Assembly Securely mounts the LVDT position sensor, RTD temperature probe, and counterweight to the fixed baseplate. Hot Plate Stirrer Used to warm and circulate the cool bath while sampling of displacement and temperature during specimen growth. Features adjustable heating and stirring rates with temperature feedback. LVDT Position Sensor Linear Variable Displacement Sensor. This device measures the displaced distance while imparting a negligible force to the test sample by means of counterweight. Temperature Probe Used to record the bath temperature as it increases. Data Logging Electronics Used to convert the analog signals from the sensors into a digital stream of recorded information. NIST traceable and expandable for future testing needs. Microsoft Excel Template The data is recorded for long term storage and streamed to the Excel Template where it automatically plots the data and computes the Af and As temperatures.
